Perfect Pitch and Royal & Derngate, Northampton, are offering British writers and composers the chance to create a brand new musical.

The winning team of writers will be awarded a commission of £12,000 to complete a full draft of a new musical over a twelve month period supported and mentored throughout by Perfect Pitch and Royal & Derngate.

At the end of the year, once the show has been developed through workshops and readings it will be presented in a professional staged reading.

The award is open to all UK based writers - from playwrights and screenwriters to novelists and songwriters - and no previous experience of writing a musical is necessary. All details about eligibility and how to apply can be found on the Perfect Pitch (www.perfectpitchmusicals.com ) and Royal & Derngate (www.royalandderngate.co.uk)
websites.

Perfect Pitch Executive Producer Andy Barnes said: “We are excited to be working with Royal & Derngate to launch The Perfect Pitch Award, which has been made possible thanks to the generous philanthropy of a number of our supporters. This award offers an exceptional team of writers the chance to be commissioned to write a full musical. We are looking to discover artists who haven’t yet had the opportunity to break through but believe they have the talent. The winners will be mentored through the development process and will have a marvellous opportunity to showcase their completed work.”

Royal & Derngate Artistic Director James Dacre said: "We are thrilled to be hosting the inaugural Perfect Pitch Award: an initiative that will see a team of exceptional collaborators commissioned and fully supported in the development, writing and showcasing of a full length musical. Opportunities to develop new musicals are all too rare in Britain these days. Opportunities this good are unheard of almost anywhere. We look forward to the winning team´s residency with us and to the possibilities ahead of them."

Stephen Fry, Patron of Perfect Pitch, said: “As Patron of Perfect Pitch, I’m delighted that we are continuing to offer unique opportunities for writers and supporting musical theatre in this country. This award is the perfect opening for emerging writers to gain a foothold in this industry and cut their teeth while creating something truly original, and we hope it will become a touchstone for writers and composers alike who wish to gain more experience and showcase their skills. I’m proud to support this award.”

Selected finalists will be asked to ‘pitch’ ten minutes of a brand new musical to a panel of experienced judges from the world of musical theatre and beyond, including playwright Samuel Adamson (“The Light Princess”, “Gabriel”, “All About My Mother”), director Rachel Kavanaugh (“Love Story”, “The Sound of Music”), Kerry Michael (Artistic Director, Theatre Royal Stratford East) and Olivier Award winning actors Michael Ball and Janie Dee

The event will take place on Friday 14 March 2014 at The St. James Studio and the winner will be announced the same day.
