PARADE, the acclaimed Broadway musical by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Alfred Uhry and award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown, will receive a London revival, in a 6-week season at The Vault at Southwark Playhouse, from August 10 to September 17 in a new production directed by Thom Southerland. The press night will be on Tuesday 16 August 2011.

Alastair Brookshaw will play the central role of Jewish factory manager Leo Frank, who in 1913 was accused and convicted of raping and murdering a 13-year-old employee, Mary Phagan. Alastair was in Craig Revel Horwood’s revival of HOT MIKADO at the Watermill Theatre, was a vocalist in the dance musical SHOES at Sadler’s Wells and was last seen in the West End in CABARET and Blood Brothers.

Laura Pitt-Pulford (Lucille Frank, Leo’s wife) recently played Sarah Brown in GUYS & DOLLS at Salisbury Playhouse. Her other roles include Lola in Craig Revel Horwood’s revival of COPACABANA at the Watermill Theatre and Betty Schaefer in SUNSET BOULEVARD at both the Watermill Theatre and its West End transfer to the Comedy Theatre.

Simon Bailey (Tom Watson) starred in the last Christmas production of STRIKING 12, directed by Simon Greiff. He was Raoul in PHANTOM OF THE OPERA; Lieutenant Torasso/Count Ludovic in PASSION at the Donmar Warehouse; Enjolras in LES MISERABLES; and understudy Galileo in WE WILL ROCK YOU.

Mark Inscoe (Hugh Dorsey) was part of the ensemble of the West End musical PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT, being also cover of the role of Bernadette; and appeared in the original cast of LA CAGE AUX FOLLES at the Menier Chocolate Factory and played Dean Martin in ‘The Rat Pack Live From Las Vegas’.

The rest of the cast features Kelly Agbowu, Jessica Bastick-Vines, Michael Cotton, Terry Doe, Natalie Green, David Haydn, Abiona Omonua, Philip Rham, Samantha Seager, Victoria Serra, Samuel J Weir.

Director Thom Southerland was named Best Director at the 2011 The Offies - Off West End Theatre Awards - for ME AND JULIET at the Finborough. He directed the European premiere of I SING!, DIVORCE ME, DARLING!, ANNIE GET YOUR GUN, THE PAJAMA GAME and sold-out all-male adaptations of Gilbert and Sullivan´s HMS PINAFORE and THE MIKADO (all at the Union Theatre); the European premiere of THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN (Landor Theatre), Irving Berlin´s CALL ME MADAM! (Upstairs at the Gatehouse) and the European premiere of STATE FAIR (Finbourough Theatre and transfer to Trafalgar Studios).

The creative team is completed by Tim Jackson (Musical Stager), Michael Bradley (Musical Director), John Risebero (Designer), Howard Hudson (Lighting Designer) and Andrew Johnson (Sound Designer).

PARADE centres on a true incident which aroused anti-semitic tensions in Atlanta and the state of Georgia. The events led to two groups emerging, the revival of the defunct KKK and the birth of the Jewish Civil Rights organisation. Parade covers the trial, and also dramatises the love story between Leo and his wife Lucille, at the same time subtley examining class and race relations, prejudice, and the Deep South.

The musical was first produced on Broadway at the Vivian Beaumont Theater on December 17, 1998. The production was directed by Harold Prince and closed 28 February 1999 after only 39 previews and 84 regular performances. It starred Brent Carver as Leo Frank, Carolee Carmello as Lucille Frank, and Christy Carlson Romano as Mary Phagan. The musical won Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Score (out of nine nominations) and six Drama Desk Awards.

The first major production in the United Kingdom played at the Donmar Warehouse from September 24 to November 24, 2007. It was directed by Rob Ashford and starred Lara Pulver as Lucielle Frank, Bertie Carvel as Leo and Jayne Wisener as Mary Phagan. Pulver was nominated for the 2008 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical. A double-CD cast recording of this production has been released by First Night Records. The recording includes new material written by Brown for the production and contains all songs and dialogue from the Donmar production. The Donmar production transferred to the Mark Taper Forum, Los Angeles, California, in September 2009, for a run through November 15, 2009.
